That’s not wrong, most tree companies (including us) do both. But the services themselves solve different problems, and knowing which one your tree actually needs is what keeps you from over-paying or under-fixing.

1What’s the Difference Between Tree Felling and Tree Trimming?

Tree felling is the complete removal of a tree — trunk, branches, and (if you want it) the stump. It’s what happens when a tree is dead, dangerously unstable, too close to a structure to manage safely, or simply in the wrong place. Once it’s felled, the tree is gone.

Tree trimming (also called pruning) is selective — cutting back specific branches while the tree stays standing. It’s maintenance, not removal: reducing a crown that’s grown too dense, taking out deadwood, shaping growth away from a roofline, or improving light and airflow. A well-trimmed tree should look healthier afterward, not smaller in some obvious way.

The line between them isn’t always a clean cut. A tree that’s 80% healthy but has one large dead limb over the driveway doesn’t need felling — it needs that limb removed, which is trimming. A tree that’s been “trimmed” every year for a decade because nobody wanted to deal with the real problem (bad structural lean, root damage) usually ends up needing felling eventually anyway. Deferred trimming doesn’t fix what felling would’ve solved years earlier — it just delays the bill.

Can You Need Both on the Same Tree?

Yes, and it’s more common than people expect. A tree can be structurally fine and worth keeping, but have one or two problem limbs that need to come off — that’s trimming, applied to an otherwise-healthy tree. On the same property, a different tree nearby might be far enough gone that trimming won’t help it at all, and it needs felling.

The reverse also happens: a tree scheduled for felling sometimes gets a trim first, simply to make the felling itself safer — clearing smaller branches before the main trunk comes down, especially when there’s not much room to work with near a wall or a neighbour’s fence.

This is really the main reason “which service do I need” is a harder question than it sounds — the answer isn’t always one tree, one service. An on-site assessment (or a clear set of photos) is what actually settles it, not a general rule.
